The left-arm fast bowlers seem an interesting breed as no matter how many times you see them bowl, they never grow out of fashion and even when the batsman of utmost quality walks out to the 22 yards, there is some sense of dual thoughts while facing them. Every time the bowler takes a stride, they invite something special.
India’s former prolific speedster, Zaheer Khan has been one such player who entertained the fans with rhythmic action and skiddy pace and today, on seventh of October the ‘young’ Zaheer’ turns 40 and will undoubtedly be proud if he looks back from where he had started. From starring in Sourav Ganguly‘s team to being the main bowler behind India’s World Cup win, the journey has been nothing short of phenomenal.
The Journey
Having made his debut in the 2000s, Zaheer Khan served India at the highest echelon for 14 long years and eventually proved to be one of the best left-arm pacers the nation has ever produced. In his playing days, the skipper used to bank on his credibility everytime the team was in a need of a breakthrough.
He handed over the baton to the likes of Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami back in 2014 and since then, he has been involved with the IPL franchise Delhi Daredevils, first as a cricketer and now as a bowling coach. Also, he is now an expert with Star Sports where he is always seen talking about the art of pace bowling and sharing his pivotal experience.
On his 40th Birthday, the former greats of Indian cricket and fans all over the world took to Twitter to send him best wishes and appreciate his efforts for the nation. Zaheer will always remain a sportsman to whom a player can look up to. It will be interesting to see if Zaheer Khan plans to take up the role as a bowling mentor of the Indian Cricket in the coming years and guide the young talent.
