Indian badminton player PV Sindhu created history on Sunday (August 1) by becoming the first Indian woman to win two Olympic medals. She achieved the feat by defeating China’s He Bing Jiao in the women’s singles bronze medal match in Tokyo Olympics 2020. Sindhu dominated the Chinese shuttler throughout the contest and walked away with a comfortable 21-13 win at the Musashino Forest Sport Plaza.
On Saturday, Sindhu was up against the world number one Tai Tzu of Chinese Taipei in the semi-final match which she lost 18-21, 12-21 on Saturday. Although she got out of the final race, Sidhu defeated He Bing Jiao to get her hands on the prestigious bronze medal. Notably, Sindhu had also clinched a silver medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics and this was her second medal.
Twitterati goes berserk as PV Sindhu creates history
The only Indian to win two individual medals at the Olympics is wrestler Sushil Kumar. Hence, this is a massive feat not for just the 26-year-old but for the entire nation. Owing to this fact, netizens went berserk after Sindhu’s triumph with social media getting flooded with greetings and messages.
For the unversed, Sindhu burst onto the scenes at the Asian Championships 2014 where she won the bronze medal. The Indian shuttler had a dream year as she went on to win bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games as well. In fact, Sindhu also won her first of 5 World Championship medals in 2014.
Extending her sensational run, Sindhu stunned one and all with her brilliance in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Although she wasn’t among the favourites, the youngster showed her class and clinched the silver at the women’s singles badminton event. Notably, Sindhu had fallen agonisingly short of the gold medal as she lost the title match to Spain’s Carolina Marin despite starting well.
Nevertheless, Sindhu now has another Olympic medal in her cabinet and fans can’t keep calm. Seconds after she got the glory, Twitter got flooded with congratulatory messages. Several members of the cricket fraternity including VVS Laxman, Anil Kumble, and Wasim Jaffer also celebrated the youngster’s achievement.
