English batsman James Vince was stunned by a Mitchell Starc delivery on the fourth day of the third Ashes Test at the WACA, Perth. Vince was batting wonderfully on 55 before a delivery from Starc castled him and dislodged his off stump. The magic delivery from the lethal left-arm pacer made the headlines quickly with the experts calling it ‘unplayable’.
Vince’s reaction
Vince was startled after watching the ball do so much. It pitched on middle and leg stump and then turned sharply towards the off stump to everyone’s surprise. Vince, when asked about his dismissal, said, ”It’s still frustrating to get out but they’re a little easier to take than the ones where you feel you’re at fault yourselves. If I faced that another 20 or 30 times, I think that would get me out every time. Give him some credit there and sweep it under the carpet and move on.”
The Experts comment
After the Tea on the third day the English batsman had decided to defend deliveries that hit the crack, Vince believed that Starc would come around the wicket and try to hit the crack. Some called it the ball of genius while others called it Jaffa! Starc was widely acknowledged for a producing the ball that angled into the right-hander from round the wicket. But it shaped away after pitching and deviated 3.9 degrees to leave the batman look like a fool. The ball of the summer, then? “Yeah I’d agree with that,” Josh Hazlewood said.
The wicket of the in-form Vince turned the game in favor of Australia with England needing another 127 runs to make Australia bat again on the fifth and final day of the Test match. They lost 5 wickets for 132 before rain saved them from an early defeat on day 4. James Vince’s inning of 55 off 95 added some life to their batting show but at the end of the day spectacular Starc made the headlines with the ball of the summer.
