CSA announce South Africa A squads for India tour; appoint Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma captains

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has appointed Aiden Markram South Africa A team’s captain for their upcoming India tour. Temba Bavuma will lead the One-Day side while the Markram is at the helm for the four-day matches. South Africa A will tour India for five-match unofficial ODI series and two four-day games in August-September this year. This contest will also play as a dress rehearsal for the senior team’s tour later when South Africa are scheduled to play three T20Is and as many Test matches.

The One-Day series will be crucial for some of the players as quite a few spots will open up with most of them from the senior side are set to retire. While it remains to be seen if Faf du Plessis steps down as a captain of the ODI side, the selectors are already looking forward by appointing Bavuma at the helm.

Nortje, Klaasen and Hendricks also picked

Anrich Nortje who missed out on playing in the World Cup due to injury has been picked in both, four-day and One-Day squads. Heinrich Klaasen who wasn’t selected for the mega event is also back in favour even as Beuran Hendricks has also made it to the squad. CSA selection convener Linda Zondi termed this tour as a crucial one for South Africa and also cleared that they are looking at Markram and Bavuma as potential leaders in the future.

“This is one of the most important South Africa A tours we have planned for some time. One of these is to broaden our leadership group and we see both Aiden and Temba playing an important role in this regard. We will be looking at other candidates during the course of the new season.

“Another is the opportunity to give some of our senior batsmen the chance to acclimatize for the Proteas Test match tour to India in October, and a third is to give the opportunity to younger players who have earned their chance through the outstanding performance at the domestic level,” he was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
