3. Champions Trophy 2013

Still chasing an undivided Champions Trophy title, the Indian team arrived in England for the 2013 edition of the tournament. This was a new look India side, which sported youth and agility. At its helm was MS Dhoni, who had secured every major ICC trophy under his belt, save the Champions Trophy. However, Dhoni’s collection of silverware was complete following a victory over hosts England in the final.

As a result of the all too familiar English rains, the contest was curtailed to a 20-over affair. India were able to put up a below par score of 129. In reply, England stuttered, finding themselves at 46/4 at the end of 9 overs. Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara then steadied the ship for the hosts. The duo were on course towards handing England their maiden Champions Trophy title which had eluded them for so long. However, a crucial spell from Ishant Sharma pulled the rug from beneath England’s feet.

It all boiled down to Ravichandran Ashwin’s final over, with England needing 15 to seal the deal. The only issue for the hosts was that they were 8-down. A four off Stuart Broad’s bat and a couple of twos brought it down to 6 off the final delivery. England’s James Tredwell, however, failed to connect bat to ball, much to the delight of MS Dhoni behind the stumps.

India defeated the hosts at Edgbaston by 5 runs. A young Indian side donned the white blazers to take the podium on the night of the final. MS Dhoni had finally ticked off the missing piece of silverware from his collection of ICC Trophies. This team and their performance ushered a new era of Indian dominance in world cricket.
