CT 2017: Match 5 - The par scores for Australia

The rain continued to follow Australia in the Champions Trophy as after washing out their opening game against New Zealand, their match at The Oval vs Bangladesh is also under the rain threat. Despite a drizzle during Bangladesh’s innings at regular intervals, it wasn’t big enough to cause an interruption and the forecast for the next couple of hours isn’t a positive sign and the Australians wouldn’t be happy especially after bowling out Bangladesh for just 182.

Coming off a loss against England, Bangladesh interestingly elected to bat first with overcast conditions and very good chances of rain in the course of the game. The Australian attack turned out to be too good over the Bangladesh batters as Hazlewood and Cummins created troubles and took out Soumya Sarkar and Imrul Kayes respectively. Mushfiqur Rahim was caught in front by Moises Henriques but replays showed there was an inside edge but Rahim didn’t review the decision.

Tamim Iqbal on other end carried on from where he left in the previous game against England and tried to stabilise the innings along with Shakib Al Hasan. The pair added 69 runs before Shakib was dismissed to a susceptible decision by the umpire.

Thought the wickets kept going on the other end, Tamim kept going and was looking to take Bangladesh close to 250 if not more before he holed out on the first ball of 43rd over bowled by Mitchell Starc. Tamim struck 95 runs during his 114-ball stay with 6 fours and 3 big sixes.

Starc got the better of the tail-enders by taking 3 wickets in 4 balls and closely missed out on a hat-trick. He finished with figures of 4/29 in his 8.3 overs as Bangladesh went down from 181/6 in 42 overs to 182 all out in 44.3 overs.

With the rain around, Australia will have to play at least 20 overs for the game to obtain a result. While the target isn’t a big one, the par score Australia will need if no more play is possible wouldn’t be big either if they have wickets in hand.
