CT IPL Flashback: 5 Players who once played for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL

The Sunrisers Hyderabad made their entry into the gigantic cricket carnival named the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2013 when the Deccan Chargers franchise was terminated from the tournament by the IPL governing Council. The team owned by the Sun TV Networks has lived up to its worth as they lifted the prestigious trophy in 2016, and are the reigning champions of the cash-rich tournament. The team has been captained by mostly foreign cricketers, all of them being big names from the world of cricket. Under the leadership of coach Tom Moody and mentor VVS Laxman the team has seen various talents from over the globe wear the Sunrisers colors, but not all could be a part of the triumph of 2016. Here are a few players who were once a part of the Hyderabad-based franchise but did not stay for long. 1. Kumar Sangakkara (Photo Source: BCCI) Regarded as one of the world’s most influential player, Kumar Sangakkara led the Sunrisers Hyderabad squad in its debut season. The genius left-hander was one of the few players who were also a part of the Deccan Chargers before moving onto the Sunrisers side. Featuring for the side in 9 matches, Sangakkara had a very short tenure in the team’s jersey. The elegant stroke player did not have a spell to remember during his time in the IPL as he only managed to score 120 runs from his 9 innings with the highest score of just 28. The reason for such a low scoring term might be the fact that the left-handed batsman was never a big hitter that is essential in a T20 tournament but was a colossal performer in the longer formats of the game. But his captaincy and experience proved to be useful for the team as they qualified for the playoffs in their inaugural year before getting eliminated by the Rajasthan Royals at the Firoz Shah Kotla in Delhi. SRH changed captain mid-way through the 2013 season and handed it over to Cameron White. 2. Cameron White (Photo Source: BCCI) Another big gun of the Sunrisers team was Cameron White, who was also a part of the team in its introductory year. The right-handed Aussie took over the captaincy from Sangakkara and successfully led the team into the playoffs. With the ability to hit towering sixes, White was expected to perform a lot better than he did in the 14 matches he got to play. His average performance for the side was marked by 234 runs which included a single half century when he scored 52. The cricketer who had immense talent and promised a bright future was also a member of the Royal Challengers Bangalore for 3 years from 2008 to 2010. 3. Amit Mishra (Photo Source: BCCI) Amit Mishra has been a useful bowler for whichever team he has played for in the Indian Premier League. Though the right-arm leg spinner has given away a lot of runs in the same process but have always picked up the right wicket at the right time. In his time for the Sunrisers, the attacking bowler picked up a total of 30 wickets from the 33 matches he has played. His best bowling figures in the Hyderabad jersey were 4 wickets for just 19 runs against the Pune Warriors which also included an impressive hattrick. He was also crucial with the bat sometimes late into the innings and has the highest score of 30 for the team. The 34-year-old bowler now plays for Delhi Daredevils who grabbed him in 2015. 4. Venugopal Rao (Photo Source: BCCI) The first Indian to be a “super sub” in One-Day Internationals, Venugopal Rao’s stint for the Sunrisers Hyderabad was not as brilliant as his time for the Deccan Chargers. The short right-handed batsman turned out to be a star performer for the Chargers, scoring 365 runs from 14 innings which included 3 fifties and 16 maximums. But his Sunrisers career was majorly disappointing where he played 7 matches but got to bat only in 5. He scored 71 runs from his 5 innings with the highest score of 21. In 2014, the now 35-year-old cricketer was bought by the Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 55 Lakh to don their jersey in the 7th edition of the tournament. 5. Quinton de Kock (Photo Source: BCCI) Quinton de Kock is one player who is not remembered by the most as a Hyderabad player. The fearless striker of the cricket ball played only 3 matches for the team which is a very short term compared to the others. The left-handed South African opener was bought by the SRH for $20,000 on 3rd February 2013 to play for the team in the 2013 season. He performed awfully in the 3 matches he featured in by only managing 6 runs. In the 2014 season, he was sold to the Delhi daredevils for Rs. 3.5 crore which is approximately $560,000 during the IPL auction. He is still very much a part of the Delhi Daredevils at present.
