The Royal Challengers Bangalore were badly humiliated by the Kolkata Knight Riders in their encounter at the packed house at Eden Garden. RCB were shot down for a paltry 49 in their innings. The total is the lowest total ever in the history of the tournament. It is indeed a massive embarrassment for the Virat Kohli-led team. In the run chase of 131, the batting lineup that boasted of players like Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle, succumbed to the pressure.
As skipper Virat Kohli rightly reflected after the game, the performance was just not acceptable on the day. It was the reckless shot selection and the big name players failed to take the responsibility. Not a single batsman failed to get in the double digits and that definitely hurt the RCB camp.
This was not the first time that the batting heavy RCB lineup failed to live up to their name. Prior to this, the team has faced the same embarrassment on quite a few occasions before as well. The entire batting lineup has crumbled like ten pins at crunch times. This was the first time that the team failed to even cross the 50-run mark.
Prior to this score, their previous lowest total was 70. It was in the game against the Rajasthan Royals in the 2014 season when they were shot out for a total of 70. Playing against the same opposition – the Kolkata Knight Riders – they had earlier been bowled out for 82 in the inaugural edition of the tournament.
A season later, in 2009, the Chennai Superkings accounted for their bundling out on 87 in just over 15 overs. Their lowest total of 49 was their 4th instance of a total less than 100 when being bowled out in the match. In the recent times, they have not faced an embarrassment of scoring less than 100. In the last two seasons of the tournament, they have never scored below 100-run mark.
