Our culture prohibits us to play cricket with boys, claims Sana Mir

Pakistan Women’s Cricket Team captain Sana Mir, ahead of the all-important clash against the Indian Women’s cricket team in the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup in England, came out and stated that the country’s culture didn’t allow girls to play cricket with the boys. But later revealed that in the recent years there has been a change of perception in regards to the matter.

The Mir-led side is yet to register their first win in the competition after losing their first two matches against South Africa and hosts. But that didn’t the stop the women to take inspiration from the men’s team who had a similar start in the recently concluded Champions Trophy and abiding by their unpredictable tag, they went on to clinch the coveted trophy.

Mir cited out the fact that winning the tournament is a huge morale-booster for the side as the nation has been struggling with the sport due variety of off-field and on-field reason. She further stressed on the fact that it was satisfying to see the entire nation backing their team in spite of the losses.

“We were not allowed to play on the roads with the boys because the culture was quite different. People would ask why a girl is playing cricket. In the last five-six years, I have seen a massive change in the perception, massive change in the number of girls participating on the streets and in the ground,” revealed Pakistan captain Sana Mir according to India Today.

Pakistan Women have the backing of the entire nation

“It’s a morale booster for all Pakistanis. We have been struggling with getting international cricket back home, we have been struggling at big tournaments and I think winning the Champions Trophy is a huge morale booster for the nation and we are all very proud of the way the boys have played,” claimed Mir.

“The whole nation is now backing us and following us. A lot of people are now aware of women’s cricket. There are a lot of people who are following us on social media. We got a lot of messages from the men’s team. They are saying that now it’s your turn to do it,” concluded the Pakistan skipper.
