CWI announces 3-team Women's CPL, to be played simultaneously with Men's tournament

With all the saga surrounding women’s IPL to take place soon, Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced an inaugural edition of the Women’s CPL this year in the Caribbean alongside the men’s CPL 2022 tournament. The women’s CPL will feature three teams Barbados Royals, Guyana Amazon Warriors and Trinbago Knight Riders battling it out for the inaugural title and will be played from August 30 to September 30.

The tournament will take place across four countries and three venues will host the group stages while one will host the finals. It has to be noted that, all players in the current West Indies international arena will feature in the tournament for both men and women and it is expected to be a huge step in the development of the women’s game in the country.

The West Indies cricket board president Ricky Skerritt mentioned that the tournament will increase the chances for women in the nation to excel and expressed his happiness over partnering with the CPL. He added the quality is expected to be of the highest order in the women’s CPL games.

“Increasing the opportunities for West Indian women and girls to get involved in cricket is one of CWI’s strategic priorities, and we are delighted that we have been able to partner with CPL to further the expansion plans that we had first unveiled in 2019 prior to the arrival of the Covid Pandemic. We are confident that all CPL women’s games will be highly competitive and will add quality entertainment to our fans in the region and around the world,” said Ricky Skerritt, the CWI President as quoted by Cricbuzz

“The addition of a women’s event to the CPL is something that has been an ambition for a long time and we are very pleased that it has become a reality,” said Pete Russell, CPL’s CEO.

Speaking about women’s cricket, West Indies have started their campaign in the Women’s World Cup 2022 really well and have won two of their three games so far. They did suffer a big defeat in the hands of India but have won some close contests against New Zealand and England which will boost their confidence moving forward.
