Dale Steyn ruled out of the series with a fractured bone in his shoulder
South Africa have suffered a huge blow today after fast bowling spearhead Dale Steyn was ruled out of the entire series due to a shoulder injury. Steyn was taken out of the field due to a relapse in the right shoulder in the morning session on Day 2 of the first Test against Australia at the WACA.
The Proteas team were waiting with a collective breath for the outcome of the medical result. And, as it has turned out now, the scans confirmed a fracture to his bone, delivering the Proteas clan an upsetting news right at the start of the three-match series Test. Apart from this, the injury also casts a shadow of uncertainty over the fast bowler’s cricketing future.
In the 38th over of the Australian innings, Steyn went down grimacing in pain after bowling the 4th ball of his 13th over to Usman Khawaja. He was taken to the hospital for further check-ups after being attended by team physiotherapist Brandon Jackson.
Steyn was later seen sitting in the dressing room with heavy strapping on his shoulder. The right arm fast bowler had hurt his shoulder previous midway through South Africa’s home Test against England last December in Durban and subsequently sidelined for the rest of the series. He later missed the India’s tour as well.
Morne Morkel, who suffered a back injury recently, was left out of the starting XI for this match because of fitness concerns may be an option for the remaining two matches. Kyle Abbott is the fifth seamer in the squad.
