Dane Vilas was 550 miles away from Johannesburg, the venue for the 3rd Sunfoil Test between South Africa and England when he was included in the playing XI. The reason was the ‘freak’ injury which ruled out Quinton de Kock out of the match, just half hour before the game commenced. This forced Cricket South African announce an immediate replacement in the form of Dane Vilas.
Vilas was preparing to play in the opening day of Cape Cobra’s domestic match in Port Elizabeth when he received an early morning call to pack his bags. Vilas took an 8:40 am flight out of Port Elizabeth and arrived at the Wanderers an hour after play with the Proteas batting.

He has been in great form in the domestic circuit and is coming on the back of an unbeaten 216 for Cape Cobras against Highveld Lions last week. This appears as a chance for him to prove his worth and settle in the side after missing out on the early opportunities he got in his career.
De Kock tumbled down in the hotel room yesterday and got hurt on his knees. However, he did not take the fall serious and brushed it aside. But, little did he know that this accident would cost him his place the next day. The wicketkeeper realised the graveness of his injury when he woke up in pain with a swollen knee.
Proteas team manager Dr. Mohammed Moosajee explained, “Quinton slipped and sprained his right knee at home late yesterday afternoon.
“Initially he didn’t think it was too serious but woke up after midnight in pain and with a swollen knee. He will have investigations done later today to ascertain the extent of the injury.”
