Brisbane heat coach Daniel Vettori is quite impressed with the young leg-break bowler Mitchell Swepson. The leggie bagged two wickets from his two matches against Melbourne Stars and Sydney Sixers respectively.
Swepson also caught the attention of legendary Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne. He has 17 first-class wickets to his name from just 7 matches.
Speaking about the bright prospect for the future, Vettori said “He’s a genuine spinner, in that he turns the ball a long way,” as quoted by foxsports.com.au. “It’s a natural thing, you either have it or you don’t, and he seems to be able to do that,” he added.
Honeymoon Period:
Vettori feels that Swepson is going through the honeymoon period of his career, as he is new to the batsmen and they haven’t seen much of him. “I think all spinners go through it, you get a honeymoon period when you come in and no one’s seen you. Then someone possibly works you out, someone’s aggressive to you and then you’ve got to find a way to get better and better,” he said.

“It probably happens at multiple stages throughout your career, which will be the same with Mitch, and your style of bowling might change slightly and your mindset might change slightly. But I think the good spinners always find a way to stay a step ahead,” he added.
Brisbane Heat also had Samuel Badree in their squad, the No.1 ranked T20 bowler in the world. “Particularly with the leg-spinners and the guys who have the ability to turn the ball both ways. When batsmen are being aggressive and possibly only looking to hit sixes in one area, and when those guys (spinners) are so skilful that they can turn it both ways, that they can out-think that batsman,” Vettori said.
“I think that’s why you’re seeing so many of the leg-spinners come in and have immediate success. They’re able to do that, and they’re also able to bowl pretty consistently,” he concluded.
