England decided to handover a Test debut to the 20-year-old Ollie Pope for the second game of the five-match series against India. Their punt to play Sam Curran worked perfectly in the series opener as he won the Man of the Match award at the Edgbaston. Moreover, an average of 65 in first-class cricket also worked in Pope’s favour as he replaced Dawid Malan in the squad. However, he also affected his first dismissal on the field and was praised by Danielle Wyatt.

In the ninth over of the Indian innings, James Anderson bowled a back of a length delivery to Pujara who tapped and took off for a run. But his partner Virat Kohli ran a bit and backed away thanks to some swift fielding by the debutant. He reached to the ball quickly which led to the mix-up between the two batsmen and ran Pujara out easily at the batsman’s end. It was a memorable moment for the youngster as he had affected his maiden dismissal and that too at the Home of Cricket.

Wyatt’s comment

No wonder getting the prestigious Test cap of England on the second morning of the Lord’s from the former wicketkeeper Alec Stewart was a huge moment for Ollie Pope. He became the 687th Test cricketer to play for his country and he posted the image of the moment on his official Instagram handle.

Danielle Wyatt, England’s woman cricketer, who is active on social media praised him for running out Pujara on his first day on the field. “Good run out sir,” she commented on his post.

As far as Pope’s maiden outing with the willow is concerned, he looked calm and composed in the middle during his 38-ball stay in the middle. He also smashed three wonderful boundaries bringing his wrist into the work. He was unfortunate to be dismissed by Hardik Pandya on 28 but looked a promising talent while he was batting.

England are getting close to India’s total now but the visitors will be buoyed by the wicket of Joe Root just at the stroke of lunch. They were 89/4 when the first session ended and an enthralling second session is upcoming for the fans.
