Sri Lanka and Bangladesh played the first match of the 2018 Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at Dubai International Cricket Stadium by 137 runs. Prior to the match, Sri Lankan batsman Danushka Gunathilaka complained of severe back pain during a training session in Dubai. Subsequently, he was ruled out of the tournament owing to the injury.
However, the left-handed batsman now finds himself tangled in trouble as it has been learned that he didn’t inform the team management that he was carrying a niggle coming into the 50-overs mega event before his departure from Colombo. Suspicions about his behavior arose when the cricketer didn’t carry any bats for the tour as per reports in The Island.
Gunathilaka’s short, yet troubled career
All-rounder Shehan Jayasuriya replaced him in the squad. Gunathilaka was set to get a substantial amount. According to the insurance scheme for the contracted players, Gunathilaka will gain all payments courtesy of the ‘loss of income’ clause. He was slapped with a fine and was handed a six-match suspension last year in August from skipping a training session.
He partied till late night and then forgot to bring his kitbag for practice during India’s tour of the country in 2017. The suspension was then reduced to three matches. Earlier in July, he got himself involved in another ugly tussle, this time with a Norwegian tourist, who accused the Lankan cricketer of raping her along with his friend in the hotel in Colombo.
She stated that Gunathilaka’s friend lured two of the tourists into their rooms and then went on to commit the crime. However, later, he was given a clean chit and he went for the Asia Cup. Gunathilaka has thus far played five Tests, 33 ODIs and 15 T20Is in which he has scored 259, 957 and 310 runs respectively. His only international century came against Zimbabwe in Hambantota last year.
