Darren Lehmann backs Aaron Finch to be part of Australia's World Cup squad
Finch is struggling to accumulate runs at the moment.
Australia’s limited overs captain Aaron Finch is finding it difficult to score runs not only in Tests but also in limited overs matches. When there are calls of giving him a break to rejuvenate and come back stronger and well in form, he has received some support from someone who has worked with him.
Former Australia coach Darren Lehmann has come forward and supported Finch during his time of need. Lehmann has said that the World Cup is just a couple of months away and Finch should be given time to settle down and find his form, even away from international cricket if needed. And once he recovers his form, bring him back to the top of the order.
A poor run of form for Finch
Aaron Finch has been struggling for runs, as he has failed to make a fifty in his last 21 white-ball innings. Questions have started to raise over his place in the team and some have even suggested that he should be given some time away. The Victorian has averaged 15.00 in one-day internationals since receiving his baggy green, with his 37 against India at Nagpur just his second innings to pass 15 in that time.
Lehmann backs Finch to the hilt
“I’m picking Aaron Finch every day of the week … people forget what happened in the last World Cup. They [Finch and David Warner] dominated,” Darren Lehmann was quoted as saying by the Sydney Morning Herald. Finch was the fourth highest run-getter for Australia in the tournament in 2015, scoring 280 runs at 35.00. So far he has scored 11 centuries in his ODI career, putting him fifth in the all-time century makers’ list for Australia in ODIs.
Lehmann wants Bancroft in the Ashes squad
Lehmann was the Australian coach when the infamous ball-tampering scandal exploded in the faces of the Australian team, leading to the bans on Steve Smith, David Warner, and Cameron Bancroft. He also stepped down as the coach of the team in the aftermath of the scandal. Lehman said that he was in touch with the trio during their bans and was “looking forward to them playing for Australia again”.
He has tipped Cameron Bancroft to be picked for the Ashes 2019 and though it might be early to say, Bancroft has scored a bucket load of runs in Sheffield Shield cricket since his return to the game in December 2018. The fledgling Test opener has scored 138 not out, 86, 11 and 52 for Western Australia since his return from suspension, soaking up 621 balls in his first game back.
“I’d have him in my Ashes squad. One thing he does do is bat time and that’s what they’ll need in England to negate [Stuart] Broad and [Jimmy] Anderson and the like,” Lehman said about Bancroft’s prospect in Ashes.
