Darren Sammy claims he and Thisara Perera were called 'Kalu' in SRH camp in the IPL

George Floyd’s passing away in the United States of America (USA) has led to the voices increasing in favour of the black people. West Indies cricketer Darren Sammy recently also urged the ICC and other boards to raise their voice against the social injustice happening against them. He also felt that the cricketing world should stand beside the people facing racism.

Sammy has now claimed that he and Thisara Perera were called ‘Kalu’ (Black) while they were playing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He also went on to say that he thought that the meaning of ‘Kalu’ was a strong black man and is now furious after knowing the exact meaning.

“Oh so that’s what that meant when they called me and Thisara Perera Kalu in India when we played for Sunrisers. I just thought they were calling me strong black man… I’m more piss now. I just learnt what that kalu meant when I played for Sunrisers in the IPL. They called me and Perera by that name. I thought it meant strong Stallion. My previous post tells me something different and I am angry,” he wrote in a series of Instagram stories on Saturday.

Darren Sammy reacted after watching the recent episode of ‘Patriot Act’ which talked about the casual racism in the households. It stated that members calling dark members of the family ‘kalu’ is normal practice.

Darren Sammy last played in the IPL in 2015

As for Darren Sammy’s IPL stint, he made his debut in the T20 league back in 2013 for the SRH franchise and then went on to play for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP). He last played in the cash-rich league in 2015 and hasn’t featured since.

Sammy played 22 matches in the IPL scoring 295 runs at a strike-rate of 122.41 and picked 11 wickets with the best being 4/22.
