Darren Sammy gets a call from one of his ex-SRH teammates; 'pleased' to have a conversation
Daren Sammy recently asked for an apology from his former SRH teammates.
The incident of Darren Sammy calling out his former teammates of IPL has a new chapter. This time the former West Indies captain revealed that one of the players has reached out to him after his revelation. A few days back, the two-time T20 World Cup-winning captain said that he and Sri Lankan cricketer Thisara Perera were called ‘Kalu’ during their time in the Indian Premier League. He was pointing out to his time at the Sunrisers Hyderabad camp in 2013 and 2014.
The all-rounder claimed that he didn’t know the meaning of the word then. He urged players who called him with that name to apologize. Fortunately, it seems one of those players has come forward and offered Sammy some type of justification. On Thursday, he wrote on Twitter that he has had an interesting conversation with one of the players. He also revealed that the player has assured him that he used to do that from a place of love.
My brother reassured me that he operated from a place of love: Daren Sammy
“I’m please to say that I’ve had a really interesting conversation with one of the guys and we are looking at ways to educate rather than focusing on the negatives. My brother reassured me that he operated from a place of love and I believe him,” Sammy wrote on Twitter.
After Sammy alleged facing racism in the Sunrisers Hyderabad, a post of Ishant Sharma confirmed it. In one old post of Sharma on Instagram, he had referred the Caribbean all-rounder as ‘kalu’.
According to the well-placed reports, Sammy had spoken about the issue in lengths on his Instagram handle. This incident happened after the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis a few weeks ago. This is when protests for anti-racist sentiment kicked off throughout the world.
“I will be messaging those people, you guys know who you are, I must admit at that time when I was being called as that word I thought the word meant strong stallion or whatever it is, I did not know what it meant, every time I was called with that word, there was laughter at that moment, I thought teammates are laughing so it must be something funny,” Sammy had said.
Though, his former SRH teammate, Irfan Pathan denied that Sammy was called that during his stay. He also said that racism existed in domestic cricket and people need to be educated.
