Two times World T20 champion skipper Darren Sammy is all set to lead Rajshahi Kings in the upcoming Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Sammy led the Kings to the finals in the last season and will look to do one better this time. According to reports emerging from Bangladesh, the West Indian is likely to represent and lead the Kings if everything goes according to plan.
Sammy had two options to choose from. One was whether to participate in the inaugural season of the Global T20 League or play the BPL. The former West Indies skipper chose the latter. It has also been reported that an official announcement about his association will be made soon. Sammy’s all-round ability will come handy for the Kings. In the last season, the all-rounder scored 276 runs at an average of 30.66, including a couple of fifties. The entertainer also bagged 6 wickets with the ball.
The franchise has roped in some big names for this season. They have signed Test captain Mushfiqur Rahim as their icon player. They have also retained four foreigners- Mohammad Sami, Kane Williams, Samit Patel and James Franklin from the previous season. Rajshahi also confirmed the inclusion of Lendl Simmons, M Waller and Luke Wright in the squad for the upcoming edition.
Sammy has recently been replaced by all-rounder Shane Watson as the captain of St. Lucia Stars in the ongoing CPL. The St. Lucia Stars have struggled to win a single game in their last six outings. And a fresh face up front will provide a change of wind. Sammy is still considered a vital part of the team.
To “incorporate some fresh thinking as the team completes this season and builds for 2018,” the Stars management has decided to end Sammy’s stint at the helm after 40 matches across five seasons.
“If it were not for Daren, St Lucian cricket would not have the standing it does in world cricket and his ability to lead both on and off the field remains unquestioned,” owner Jay Pandya said. “However, after the results that we have seen over the first half of the 2017 Hero CPL, a change is needed to freshen things up as we look to win the remaining four fixtures this season.” he added.
