The outbreak of the coronavirus has left the entire world in complete chaos and the sporting arena is not spared either. Cricket matches — international and domestic — have been suspended because of the pandemic that has claimed nearly 10,000 lives so far worldwide while affecting 2.4 lakh. In India, the popular Indian Premier League (IPL) has remained suspended because of the scare both to avoid contact and because of travel bans.
People have been advised to stay indoors for the maximum amount of time while countries like China, Italy and Iran have struggled to contain the epidemic. Professional cricketers have found it hard to stay indoors as organisers of tournaments and series but they are doing their best to not just remain pre-occupied but also spread awareness among their fans on how to stay healthy.
West Indies all-rounder Darren Sammy, who is known to be a colourful character, joined the party to spread awareness about COVID-19 and he did so with a touch of humour. The 36-year-old, who recently featured in the inconclusive Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2020 — first as a player and then coach — took to Instagram where he posted a video in which he was seen walking in public wearing a stylish goggle and air-filtering mask. The player could not be identified and resembled something like an alien and he captioned it: “Me vs #covid_19”.
Darren Sammy stepped down as Zalmi skipper mid-way in PSL 2020
Darren Sammy, who has won the West Indies two world titles in T20s, started the PSL as the captain of Peshawar Zalmi who he has also led to the title a few years ago. But he stepped down because of poor form in the middle of the tournament. Veteran pacer Wahab Riaz replaced Sammy who became the head coach of the franchise.
The PSL was suspended before the semi-finals and final were played because of the coronavirus scare and one player from Karachi Kings — Alex Hales — was suspected with the virus. It is still not clear whether the tournament will resume in the future or be called off.
