Darren Sammy strikes his first commentators curse
West Indies’ two-time World T20 champion skipper Darren Sammy last night (on Sunday) during his stint as a commentator in the Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad disclosed a compelling incident involving his WI teammate Kieron Pollard.
Sammy said that Kieron would be raging at him since he asked the Mumbai Indians allrounder to chat with him ahead of the game who declined it but he persisted and after being insisted Pollard agreed. Sammy who wasn’t picked by any of the eight franchises during the IPL 2016 auction; a few weeks into the league decided to pick up the commentary job added that Polly is superstitious and doesn’t like to talk much before heading out to bat.
Mumbai were in trouble in their inning and reeling at 30 for the loss of 5 wickets; that is when Kieron Pollard walked out to bat. Ideally, MI would have expected him to counterattack the opposition bowlers and bail the team out of trouble and lead them to a defendable total. Pollard took his time to settle, played a few balls and as Sammy started to describe him as a ‘big hitter’, ‘match finisher’ and even before he could complete his sentence Moises Henriques had Kieron Pollard caught by Barinder Sran for 11 from 13 balls.
The game got worse for MI as they failed to even get to triple figures. They were bowled out for 92 and lost their first home game at Vizag to the Sunrisers Hyderabad by a humiliating margin of 85 runs.
Co-commentators congratulated Sammy on striking his first target with the ‘commentators curse’, which is a term used to refer to an incident when the batsman gets out immediately after the commentators praise him. The Windies T20 skipper said that Pollard would be really angry at him for pressing on that chat and since he only did it because it was Sammy who had requested.
