Former South African captain AB de Villiers dropped a bomb yesterday. It was a quiet Wednesday afternoon until de Villiers announced his decision to retire from all forms of international cricket with immediate effect. The fans were all in a state of shock but as the decision was already made people started to congratulate him for his amazing career and lauded his contribution to the sport.
His former teammate David Miller also turned up on Twitter to thank ABD. Miller said that the 34-year-old changed the way the game was played and that he has been an inspiration to many. The Proteas middle order batter further went on to state that AB is an example of a ‘true champion’ and that it was his privilege to have played alongside the legend.
Miller tweeted, “Congrats to @ABdeVilliers17 for a career that changed the way the game was played. Inspiration to so many and an example of a true champion. Privilege to have played with you Abbas. #ABDevilliers #Legend”

Earlier, de Villiers who played 114 Tests, 22 ODIs and 78 T20Is for South Africa put out a video in his app and on social media to announce his decision. He said, “I have decided to retire from all international cricket with immediate effect
“After 114 Test matches, 228 ODIs and 78 T20 Internationals, it is time for others to take over. I have had my turn, and to be honest, I am tired,” AB added.
He mentioned that it was a tough decision but he thought about it and this seems to be the right call at this point in time. However, he will continue to play domestic cricket and represent his state side.
“This is a tough decision, I have thought long and hard about it and I’d like to retire while still playing decent cricket. After the fantastic series wins against India and Australia, now feels like the right time to step aside.
“It would not be right for me to pick and choose where, when and in what format I play for the Proteas. For me, in the green and gold, it must be everything or nothing. I will always be grateful to the coaches and staff of Cricket South Africa for their support through all these years. The most important thank you goes out to all of my teammates throughout my career, I wouldn’t be half the player that I am without the support throughout the years,” ABD stated.
