David Miller, the South African left-handed batsman has recently announced that he will take an indefinite break from playing first-class cricket in the Rainbow Nation. However, he will keep playing limited-overs cricket for the Dolphins. The swashbuckling batter has played 63 first-class matches in which he has notched 3342 runs with six centuries and 19 half-centuries.

The 29-year-old cricketer has played 170 international matches for his nation but is yet to don the white jersey. After making the announcement, the Natal-born player clearly remarked that the 2019 Cricket World Cup in England and Wales remains to be his prime focus at least for the time being and he wants to contribute with the willow to the best of his ability.

It is disappointing to lose David from our pool of potential Test players

Recently, he updated about his decision and mentioned the same to have been a tough call. “It was a tough decision to make. I have always loved playing red ball cricket but I have decided that I would, in future, like to concentrate on white ball cricket to make sure that I am in a position to give myself the best opportunity to play for the Proteas in the format that I love.

This is an important decision for me, especially with the World Cup looming next year. I will also be available to play for the Dolphins in all limited-overs competitions and will give it my all to help them win trophies this season,” Miller was quoted as saying in jacarandafm.com.

Thabang Moroe,  Cricket South Africa (CSA) Chief Executive expressed his disappointment over losing Miller as a probable candidate for a Test selection in the future. However, he was ready to understand the reason behind Miller’s decision.

“It is disappointing to lose David from our pool of potential Test players. At the age of 29 he still has many years of good cricket left in him in all formats but at the same time we have to understand that he wants to throw his full weight into helping the Proteas to win the ICC World Cup,” he added.

South Africa is one of the teams who are yet to lift the championship. The Proteas are scheduled to play their first match against England at Kennington Oval on May 30. Miller is currently playing for Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
