David Warner and Aaron Finch put up a record stand for the first wicket
But the duo did manage to score the highest partnership at the ground in ODIs.
The bandwagon of the series rolled into Bangalore for the 4th ODI of the series. With the Men in Blue leading the series 3-0 the Australians had not a lot but pride to play for. Steve Smith won the toss at the Chinnaswamy Stadium and decided to bat first. David Warner and Aaron Finch walked out to open the batting on a bright sunny day in Bangalore. The city is cooler than the other venues where they’ve played and would’ve been a huge relief for the Aussies.
A flat track with no assistance for the pacers or the spinner meant the two attacking Aussie openers enjoyed their time in the middle. Finch got the innings off with a boundary on the second ball of the innings from Mohammed Shami. Team India made three changes in the bowling department as Shami, Umesh Yadav and Axar Patel came in for Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav.
The ball was coming onto the bat nicely and the two new ball bowlers looked rusty, Umesh, in particular, struggled to get his line, as well as pace, going. Finch and Warner relished the opportunity and dealt in boundaries and sixes. The small boundaries and fast outfield helped them give the team a flying start.
After the initial burst from his pacers skipper Virat Kohli brought in the left-arm spinner Patel but it wasn’t his day either. The 23-year-old who is usually spot on with his line and tight with his economy was taken apart. He was hit for three sixes and overall cost India 66 runs in his 10.
David Warner soon got to his 14th ODI century, playing his 100th ODI. Finch also continued his terrific form from the previous game having scored a hundred. The opening stand was worth 231 runs before Warner was dismissed by India’s part-time bowler Kedar Jadhav as he holed out at long-on attempting a big shot against the unorthodox slow bowler.
He got out for 124 from 119 balls after hitting 12 boundaries and four sixes during his stay. While Finch gave his wicket away in the very next over, hitting one from Yadav straight to Hardik Pandya at mid-off. He missed out his hundred by just six runs.
But the duo did manage to score the highest partnership at the ground in ODIs for any wicket as they broke the previous record of 183 held by the Australian duo of Shane Watson and Brad Haddin that they scored against Canada in the 2011 World Cup.
