Australian opener David Warner has come out in support of his skipper Steve Smith after the series loss against India. Rodney Hogg, a former cricketer, had accused Smith of picking his mates in the national team. He had slammed the skipper, selectors and Cricket Australia as the team’s poor run of form continued away from home. But Warner has shrugged off the comments and expressed that as players they can only try and give their best on the field.
The team from down under is under immense pressure as the fans and former cricketers have lashed out at their performances in the ongoing ODI series in India. They gave away the game from commanding positions in all the matches and in Indore were in an excellent position to post a score of somewhere around 350. But the continued middle order struggles restricted them to mere 292. The next match against the hosts will be played on Thursday in Bengaluru.
Warner supports Smith
The vice-captain brushed aside the accusation Hogg imposed and cleared that the team is picked by the selectors. He was not at all amused with his comments and said that the team is trying its level best.
“Everyone is going to have their opinions and they are entitled to have their opinions. I don’t know from where all these theories crop up from. It is up to the selectors to pick the team and at the end of the day, if you are picked up, you go out there and give your best. That is how it always has been,” he told reporters ahead of the fourth ODI on Thursday.
The left-hander also cleared that players don’t have anything in their hands and selectors are there to pick the team.
“Moreover, players do not have anything in their hands about getting selected or not selected, only thing they can do is to perform to their best of abilities,” he added.
Australia will look to restore some pride after losing the series and gain some confidence by winning the dead rubber.
