The pay dispute between Cricket Australia (CA) and the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) has taken another turn. As the deadline passed today, it was confirmed that 230 players are unemployed now. CA and the ACA failed to reach any conclusion leaving players unconfirmed about their future and also putting upcoming international fixtures in doubt.
While a meeting is expected to be held tomorrow where the players would supposedly address their concerns, it seems highly unlikely that a solution may come out. Cricket Australia seems quite firm regarding their decision of revenue sharing while the ACA president Greg Dyer has termed it as ‘divide and rule’ policy by CA.
“Reasonable young men and women have been set upon by their employer with tactics not seen before in Australian sport,” Dyer said. The ACA noted in a statement the game is in the “worst state of uncertainty since the days of World Series Cricket”.
Since today is 1st July and Australian cricketers are effectively unemployed from today, the likes of David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc and Usman Khawaja had hilarious takes on the current situation. The trio appeared to be in some urgency to find another job as their contracts were scrapped.
Here are their Instagram posts:
Maxwell wrote- “Even though we’re now unemployed, I thought it would be a good idea to keep working on my slog sweep, just incase the MOU gets done soon…”
Mitchell Starc shared a picture of him playing golf on Instagram saying, “Thought I’d better give another profession a go… #unemployed Celtic Manor yet to disappoint.. Absolute treat ????⛳️”
Usman Khawaja also posted a picture of him filling some form on a job website with the caption: “Just checking my options… #seek #unemployed #imavailable #cricket”
On the other hand, the Australian vice-captain David Warner found the memes really funny as he lauded it. He posted a picture of him taking care of Ricky Ponting’s greyhounds on Instagram with the caption: “This is outstanding ??. Love the humour. @usman_khawajy can you help me ??”
While the jokes may continue for the moment, let’s hope Cricket Australia resolves their differences as quickly as possible before it further ruptures their image.
