David Warner hints at SRH retaining Kane Williamson as skipper for IPL 2022
Williamson took over from Warner as SRH's skipper in the middle of IPL 2021.
Veteran Australian batter David Warner has dropped a slight hint regarding Kane Williamson’s fate in the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League. Back in 2018, Williamson led the Sunrisers Hyderabad to the final of the IPL where they lost to the Chennai Super Kings. In that season, Warner wasn’t a part of the team due to the ball-tampering saga in Cape Town earlier in March.
Once Warner was back into the team, Williamson went back to warming the benches and was in and out of the eleven. However, the latter was appointed as the full-time skipper of the Sunrisers after Warner didn’t quite have the best of seasons in 2021. SRH ended the previous edition at the bottom of the points table with three wins and a poor net run rate of -0.545.
Warner, in the meantime, reckoned that Kane may well resume his duties for the Orange Army in the upcoming season as well. “@yaazey6 make sure you keep supporting as my friend Kane will still be there, please,” Warner said while replying to an user on Instagram.
Warner and Williamson recently faced off in the final of the T20 World Cup 2021 between Australia and New Zealand. Both batters scored half-centuries, but Williamson’s 48-ball 85 went in vain.
David Warner’s reply
Prior to the 2021 season, Warner was a fulcrum of the Sunrisers’ lineup. But to his dismay, not only did he lose captaincy, but was also sidelined from the playing eleven. In the UAE leg of IPL 2021, Jason Roy replaced him in the eleven, although the move didn’t make much of a difference.
As far as Williamson is concerned, West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite said that SRH may give the Kiwis’ skipper a chance to lead the team again. Brathwaite also said that the Sunrisers may undergo a complete overhaul after how they performed in 2021.
“SRH may want Kane Williamson to captain. Rashid Khan is a certainty. I certainly want Jason Holder to be a part of the mix as well. Having been a part of the franchise, one thing that the franchise has missed for a number of years is a reliable all-rounder,” Brathwaite was quoted as saying.
