Australian opener David Warner had a torrid Ashes 2019 series, despite a good return to international cricket in the ICC World Cup. The confidence was low, but the spirit was not broken and the southpaw hit form against the Sri Lankan side in the just concluded T20I series, as they were whitewashed 3-0 in a dominant fashion.

Aaron Finch-led side made short work of the Islanders in all the three matches. Sri Lanka managed scores of 99/9, 117 and 142/6 in the three matches which they lost by 134 runs, 9 wickets, and 7 wickets respectively. The Australian team was at the top of their game with Warner leading the way with a century in the first match and two half-centuries to follow. The interesting thing here was that he remained not out throughout the series, in which Australia lost a total of six wickets.

During his brilliant run, the diminutive, yet powerful batsman scored a 100* as Australia posted 233/2 in the first match, made 60* as he helped the team chase down 117 runs and in the last match made 57* to help Australia get over the line in the 143-run chase. With these haul of scores, he amassed 217 runs in three matches and broke Virat Kohli’s record of 199 runs, made in the 2015-16 season Down Under.

Warner now is in the second place for most runs in a 3-match T20I series, just behind Colin Munro of New Zealand, who slammed 223 runs against West Indies in 2017-18. Warner also became the third batsman to hit three 50 plus scores in three consecutive T20Is with the other two batsmen being Virat Kohli and Colin Munro. The explosive left-hander became the first Australian batsman to go past 2000 runs in the shortest format for Australia.

He also went past 100 sixes in international cricket, the record for which is held by Adam Gilchrist with 105 sixes. The next challenge for the home side is to face the no.1 ranked T20I side Pakistan in another 3-match series. The Green Army is coming at the hosts with many new faces in their squad and the first match between the sides will be played at SCG.
