While many have heralded English all-rounder Ben Stokes for his heroics in his attempt to save a couple from homophobic abuse, David Warner’s wife Candice Warner feels differently. Candice has lashed out on Stokes and believes that he should not be allowed to play in the upcoming Ashes series. The incident resulted in Stokes being arrested and subsequently losing his place in the England squad.

The couple, Kai Barry, 26, and Billy O’Connell, 20, came out in the open said that the all-rounder had saved them from getting into “real trouble.” A former professional ironwoman, Candice is sceptical and does not believe that Stokes should be spared for his role in such a derogatory incident. Her comments come less than a fortnight after her husband described his altercation with Joe Root during the 2013 Ashes as “a lot less” serious than Stokes’ situation.

Stokes will not be allowed to play until the investigation is resolved

Speaking on Channel Nine’s Sports Sunday show Candice said, “I know the Australian players would love to have him out here because they want to play against the best, but I don’t think he can come, I really don’t. That footage is disgusting, it is really, really bad.”

“Even if he’s not charged, David wasn’t charged when he hit Joe Root, he was banned for two games. Why wouldn’t Ben Stokes get reprimanded? This is a lot worse, this is way worse,” she stated.

The 26-year-old all-rounder has not yet been charged and remains under police investigation. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced that Stokes would not be allowed to play any match for England until the ongoing investigation is resolved. His all-around abilities have made him one of the most important cogs in the English squad and his exclusion is seen as a major blow to them as they prepare for the Ashes set to kick off in Australia next month.
