DCCA commits a blunder; forgets Karun Nair as a triple centurion other than Virender Sehwag
Karun Nair scored 303* against England in 2016.
Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) felicitated Virender Sehwag and named get 2 of Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium after him on Tuesday. This is a huge honour to one of the greats of the game and the gate was filled with the remarkable feats he achieved in his illustrious career. However, they committed a huge blunder by mentioning that the Nawab of Najafgarh is the only triple centurion for India in Tests. Karun Nair who is also from Delhi has slammed a triple ton against England last year.
The former India opener was also present at the inauguration ceremony ahead of the first T20I between India and New Zealand in the capital city of India on Wednesday. Ashish Nehra, who will play the final game of his career, also attended the event along with coach Ravi Shastri, Mohammad Siraj and Dinesh Karthik. Though the event went off pretty well and as planned the factual goof up by the cricket body was soon brought to the notice by the media and is being criticised a lot now for forgetting Karun’s achievement.
It is a great honour
Virender Sehwag was looked extremely pleased and addressed the media after the event in which he said, ““It is a great honour and today we have a gate named after a cricketer but later we can have dressing room, stands and other things named after cricketers. It’s a good thing and positive move from DDCA. I had a wish that whenever such a function happens, we should call all the cricketers who have represented Delhi and India.”
He also hoped that any young cricketer entering the Stadium will get motivated after reading his name on the gate. “Any young cricketer will get motivated reading the name. Virender Sehwag played here as a kid and when he left there is a gate named after him so if I can also play for U19, U16, U23 or Ranji for Delhi and then represent India, then a gate, stand or something will be after my name,” he concluded.
Virender Sehwag is the only Indian to score two triple centuries in the Test format. Now it remains to be seen if DDCA gets rectified the mistake or they will keep the gate as it is.
