Indian skipper MS Dhoni has stated that the coach who can understand the culture of Indian players in the team will achieve better success than the rest others.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) advertised for the post of head coach last week and set June 10 as the deadline for receiving applications.

The application deadline remains June 10, as announced by BCCI President Anurag Thakur. So far the race is on between Ravi Shastri and chief selector Sandeep Patil who have already applied for the coveted post.

The nine-point circular in the advertisement also included a clause which stated a ‘desire’ to have a Hindi speaking coach. However, the BCCI later clarified its stance on the disputed section.

When asked if communication would be a barrier for the new coach, Dhoni said, “I don’t there is much problem as far as communication is concerned. It’s not a big barrier.

There are players who come from different language groups and sometimes when they do not understand what the coach is saying they take the initiative of asking others. Communication can be the criteria but not the only one,” he said ahead of India’s tour to Zimbabwe for three ODI’s and three T20 matches.

Dhoni also made a mention that the new coach should fit into the team well.

“Everybody wants to become the coach of the Indian team because we keep playing continuously. A lot of international coaches face a similar problem that we play a lot of cricket. According to the availability we will have to see the best option that fits into the team well,” Dhoni said.

MS Dhoni also played it safe on the captaincy issue. There is a silent debate going over India’s ODI and T20 captaincy. Many feel that it’s time for Dhoni to pass on the limited overs captaincy responsibility to Test skipper Virat Kohli.

Dhoni said it was a call that the BCCI had to take.

“Any decision about captaincy is something that the BCCI will have to take,” he said at a pre-departure press conference in Mumbai today.
