Deep Dasgupta names the young Indian batsmen best suited for Test cricket
One of Dasgupta's picks is yet to make his Test debut after playing ODI cricket back in 2019.
Deep Dasgupta, the former Indian wicketkeeper, has churned out the names of three young Indian cricketers, who he reckons are best suited to Test cricket. The 42-year-old made the revelations while talking to CricTracker on Instagram Live. To start with, he named Shubman Gill, who is yet to make his debut in the format despite being selected in the national squad quite a few times.
Gill has only played a couple of ODIs in the 2019 tour of New Zealand when India’s Virat Kohli went on a break. The Fazilka-born has shone for Punjab, his domestic team and the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well. He made the headlines initially after becoming the Player of the Tournament in the 2018 edition of the U19 World Cup in New Zealand.
Thereafter, he got an IPL contract and he has managed to put in strong performances for India A as well. Dasgupta also picked Prithvi Shaw, who made his debut against the West Indies back in October 2018. However, injuries and doping charges kept him on the sidelines for a significant amount of time. Recently, against the Black Caps, the Mumbai batter made his international return.
Deep Dasgupta makes his choices
Recently, in Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan’s absence, the Young Turk also got to play three ODIs versus the Black Caps where he managed 84 runs. As his third choice, Dasgupta went for the much talked-about Rishabh Pant. “Shubman Gill, Prithvi Shaw and Rishabh Pant are the young batsmen to watch out for in Test cricket,” Dasgupta was quoted as saying during the chat.
Pant made his debut back in 2017 against England in a T20I at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. He was a member of the U19 Indian team, which finished as the runners up of the 2016 World Cup in Bangladesh. In 2018, the left-hander made his Test debut against England.
Later that year, he went on to make his ODI debut as well versus the West Indies. He is also being deemed as someone, who could fill into MS Dhoni’s massive boots. To his dismay, he hasn’t come up with consistent performances thus far and has had to face severe criticism.
