MS Dhoni has seen too many tough situations while leading team India especially in Tests. India was whitewashed in England and Australia in the longest format in 2011 under him and the tough times in Tests continued until 2014 New Zealand tour as well. The two-match Test series is fondly remembered for Brendon McCullum‘s triple century when he had bailed his team out of dire straits.

The marathon 352-run stand for sixth wicket in the second innings had saved the Kiwis the blushes in the second and final Test. Recalling the game when India were so close to victory, Mohammed Shami, during the live Instagram session with Manoj Tiwary, stated that it was a very frustrating time as the then New Zealand captain didn’t get out at all.

However, he had offered a chance while at 14 only to be dropped by Virat Kohli. And McCullum then made the visitors pay heavily for the let off. The bowlers were already frustrated and during the same innings, another batsman’s catch was dropped on the penultimate ball before lunch off Shami which left the pacer fuming.

Bevakoof kisi aur ko banana, mujhe nahi, MS Dhoni had said to Shami

In disappointment and anger, the Bengal pacer ran in and delivered a harmless bouncer which even went over the MS Dhoni’s head for four byes which clearly didn’t impress the latter. Shami recalled the moment and said, “On the penultimate ball before lunch, some batsman edged and the catch was dropped. Last ball then I bowled a bouncer which went over Mahi bhai’s head.”

While going back to the dressing room, MS Dhoni then asked the fast bowler the reason for not bowling the final ball of the session properly only to get an ignorant answer from Shami. And the veteran then sarcastically, told him not to fool him as he is the senior and has seen a lot of players come and go.

Remembering the words, Mohammed Shami said, “Mahi bhai ne mujhe thodese tight language mein bola, ‘Dekh beta, bohot log aaye mere saamne. Bohot log khel ke chale gaye jhut mat bol.’ He said in a different way but it was with a bit of aggression. He further said, ‘Bete tumhare senior hai tumhare captain hai hum. Ye bevakoof kisi aur ko banana.”

The above statement roughly translates to (Mahi bhai told me a bit strictly, ‘See brother, I have seen many players come and go. Don’t lie to me. I am your senior and your captain. Don’t fool me’). As far as the match is concerned, India lost a golden opportunity to level the series as New Zealand drew the game after being 94/5 in the second innings thanks to their captain’s heroic effort.
