Delhi Daredevils plan to rope in Jason Gillespie as the head coach for IPL 2018

Indian Premier League side Delhi Daredevils have turned their attention to former Aussie speedster Jason Gillespie for their head coach role. Gillespie’s involvement with Yorkshire came to an end in the year of 2016 and is now working with the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League.

According to a Delhi Daredevils official, Gillespie’s experience will contribute a lot to the squad. He also mentioned that Gillespie is interested in taking up the job and the franchise is in discussions with him. Gillespie is now 42 years old and the official spoke to the Indian Express about the possible appointment of the senior Aussie.

“He brings a lot to the table. He has vast experience behind him. He has shown keenness to be a part of Delhi team and talks are still on,” the Delhi Daredevils official said.

Delhi Daredevils were left without a coach as legendary Indian batsman Rahul Dravid stepped down from his duties as the mentor of the team. Dravid was associated with the team in the iconic 10th edition of the IPL, but is now serving as the coach of the India ‘A’ and under-19 teams.

Gillespie had a decent Australia career which saw him represent the country 72 times in the Test format and 97 times in One Day Internationals. In his career that stretched for a decade, he took up 259 wickets in Tests and 142 wickets in ODIs. He was an important member of the Aussie squad alongside, Glenn McGrath and Brett Lee when the Aussies ruled the cricketing scenario.

He then shifted his role to coaching, where he lifted the struggling county Yorkshire from the second division in his first season before helping them win back-to-back County Championship titles in 2014 and 2015.

“I do a little bit of work for Cricket Australia. I’ll be looking to see what other opportunities are out there in T20 leagues around the world,” Gillespie said at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.
