Delhi opener sacrificed semester exams to play the Ranji Trophy semi-final

Following his three half-centuries in the current Ranji Trophy season Kunal Chandela, the Delhi opener hammered his maiden century in the ongoing semi-final match against Bengal to put his team in the driver seat. He paired with Gambhir to put a massive 232-run stand for the first wicket and has strengthened Delhi’s hopes of entering the finals.

For most of the Indian cricketers like Ajit Wadekar, Sunil Gavaskar and Bishan Bedi, the University cricket matches functioned as their stepping stone to success. Likewise, it also benefited Kunal Chandela, the young Delhi opener who has been their team’s best discovery for the future.

After his innings, the 23-year-old said, “I have benefited a lot from University cricket. I have heard how past greats of Delhi cricket have emerged from University cricket. My selection in Delhi Ranji Trophy has been on basis of back to back Vizzy Trophy triple tons. You learn to play day’s game from Vizzy Trophy.”

The Sacrifice

Kunal who is currently studying BSC (IT) at Hembati Nandan Bahuguna University in Garhwal skipped his examinations to play in the Ranji Trophy semi-final against Bengal. He said, “I had my exams on 20thbut I had to skip it. I take time out to study and attend lectures when I get time.”

Chandela who is the son of electrical contractor also revealed that Rishab Pant was his junior in Indian Public School during his 9th & 10th standard.

Then he thanked the fellow opening batsman Gambhir for his steady support in shaping his batting style and he quoted “Gautam bhaiyya told me to play the way I know the best. He told me to remain free while batting. When I tried a sweep shot, he told that since I am hitting well straight, I don’t need to play across.”

In the end, he concluded that he plays with the dream to represent Indian team in national colours and not with an intention of being picked in an IPL team.
