Delhi Police bust a gambling racket in the city during an IPL game

Delhi Police have arrested three men for placing illegal bets on the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. This is not the first time that the gambling racket has been busted as it is a routine thing for the authorities while the cash-rich T20 league is in progress. The trio has been accused of running an online betting syndicate from a residence in New Delhi as police seized a lot of stuff from them. However, more rackets have been busted across the country within 10 days of the commencement of the tournament.

The authorities are more aware of such betting rackets these days ever since the spot-fixing scandal was hit the IPL in 2013 when three cricketers Ankit Chavan, Ajit Chandila and S Sreesanth were caught. Even Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings franchises were suspended for two years. The IPL, ever since its inception in 2008, has been plagued with controversy as corruption and match-fixing have often taken the centre-stage.

Police statement

Youdhbir Singh, the senior police officer in Delhi, confirmed the news informing the reporters that the trio was caught betting during the game between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils. “We arrested the three on Saturday while they were betting during the Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils match. They were insisting that they are first-timers and it was just a one-off incident, but we know that they were doing it since the start of the league on April 7,” he said.

He also went on to give the details of the stuff that was seized from the residence where they were caught betting during the game. “Eleven mobile phones, a laptop, a television set and a digital channel receiver were seized,” Singh added.

According to the reports, the Police have also busted the rackets in other parts of the country so far. The Southern city of Hyderabad and the eastern State of West Bengal have come under the scanner for the same reason.
