Delhi Police recently busted an online betting racket and arrested three bookies involved in gambling during TNPL 2017 on Saturday, according to the statement by police. The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Madhur Varma, stated the gang operated from a rented house in North Delhi’s Anand Vihar area. According to Mathur, the accused go by the name of Vinod Sharma, Vikas Choudhary and Mukesh Aggarwal. The police confirmed the trio as residents of Delhi.
In the raid, Delhi Police recovered as many as 13 mobile phones, two laptops and three televisions from the accused apart from other miscellaneous things. The trio placed a bet for a whopping sum of 4 crores in a cricket match in the ongoing TNPL (Tamil Nadu Premier League) on Friday, according to the statement by the Deputy Commissioner.
Rampant Betting and Gambling Plaguing cricket
The briefing from Delhi Police stated that the accused operated online betting websites to extract details of the match as the live telecast of the match lags by four to five seconds from the actual match. The trio used a betting assistant software which recorded the bets placed by one and all, keeping a tab on the various matches and subsequent earnings from it.
It was only a few weeks back when three people were arrested due to links with a betting racket during the recently concluded India-Pakistan finals of the ICC Champions Trophy on June 18. Those three men were arrested from a hotel in the North Delhi’s Civil Lines area, according to IANS. During the IPL, Delhi Police raided various dens which were involved in gambling and betting.
According to the police, the racketeers were placing huge amounts of money as stakes on the high-octane match. On June 9, the police arrested four persons for running an online betting racket during the India-Sri Lanka Champions Trophy cricket match as well.
