Former Australian batsman Mike Hussey, who has played under MS Dhoni in the Indian Premier League with the Chennai Super Kings, only has good things to speak about Dhoni’s captaincy over the team. While Hussey has been long retired and has delved into the coaching role for various places, Dhoni is also seemingly in the twilight of his career. Perhaps the first step towards hanging up his gloves would be the stepping down as captain.
Earlier this week, MS Dhoni has been all over the news after stepping down as skipper. Many speculate that he has given the reins to Virat Kohli with the hope that Kohli has enough time to build the squad for the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. Kohli has already impressed as skipper after having led the Indians to the top ranking on the ICC Test rankings.
“Dhoni was an inspirational leader and I loved playing under him. He gave the players perspective and made them realise that though cricket is important, it is not the most important thing in a person’s life,“ Hussey told Times of India.
Hussey went on to add that his personality as a captain and a leader is also something that is simply amazing. Dhoni is also known for his calmness as skipper and ability not to panic whenever the chips were down and he had to be the one to finish the match.
“He has helped the Indian team to so much success in all forms of the game, but an even better person with a great family . His calmness…he had this amazing ability to help players relax, enjoy the game and not put too much pressure on themselves, which is not that easy in a place like India where cricket is a religion,” he said.
