Did Adam Voges take a catch wearing gloves?

On Saturday, media reports following a twitter post that questioned whether Adam Voges was wearing surgical gloves while fielding against the Black Caps on Day 1 of the second Test match underway in Christchurch.

Voges took a catch to dismiss Corey Anderson off Nathan Lyon’s bowling. A close up of the catch was played in replays and it looked like he was wearing something on his wrist. A twitter user then claimed that Voges was wearing surgical gloves and questioned if it was legal. But, it turns out, that it appeared so because of an optical illusion and Voges was in fact, wearing nothing but a tan coloured tape on his right wrist.

A spokesperson from Cricket Australia has dismissed reports claiming Voges was wearing gloves while taking that catch. The spokesperson confirmed that he was wearing strapping tape on his right wrist, which he is permitted to.

The rules state that, other than the wicketkeeper, fielders are not allowed to wear a glove of any type and can only stop the ball with their body. Any breaking of this rule will result in a five-run penalty for the fielding team. Also, fielders are to ask for permission from umpires even if they intend to wear any protection on their hands.

New Zealand were 266/5 when the catch was taken and Anderson was on 72 off just 65 balls as NZ were cruising to their first innings total of 370.
