Team India was handed a massive defeat by an innings and 159 runs in the second Test at Lords by the hosts who put up a strong performance both with the bat and the ball to outplay the visitors. The Indian batters except for skipper Virat Kohli, have found it really hard to score runs against the moving ball so far in the first two matches. Also, the senior wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik has failed to replicate his recent limited-overs form in this Test series.
He had smashed a quick-fire 80 runs in the three-day warm-up match against Essex and was included in the first two games in an attempt to provide him with a fair chance to revive his Test career in the country where he was the highest run-scorer for India in 2007 series, in which he played as an opener. However, his struggles with the bat and gloves so far have led to Dilip Vengsarkar backing Rishabh Pant for the third Test in Nottingham.
You have to adapt quickly
He wants the Indian team to include young wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant in place of Karthik for the third Test match at Trent Bridge. The former chief selector mentioned that apart from the Indian captain none of the batsmen are looking to score runs in challenging conditions. He reckoned that the batters need to adjust themselves in all types of conditions at the earliest, whether it be Australia or England, and need to show proper application to score runs.
“Rishabh Pant should get in. Apart from Kohli, nobody has shown that they could score runs here. Whether it’s English or Australian conditions, you have to adapt quickly. You have to apply yourself and get runs,” said Vengsarkar in a conversation with BBC radio.
The 20-year old Pant has been in a good form in the recent India A series in England, where he smashed two half-centuries against the Lions. The India A coach Rahul Dravid also recently spoke about the youngster’s determination and technique and felt that it is the right time for him to be part of the Indian Test team.
