Dinesh Karthik hopeful of sharing the dressing room with Rishabh Pant after the World Cup

Dinesh Karthik edged out Rishabh Pant to make it to India’s World Cup squad which was announced on Monday. It came as a surprise for many as the latter looked primed to get selected after Karthik was overlooked for the Australia series at home. But one has to credit him the way the Tamil Nadu player has made a comeback when all the odds were against him.

Karthik clearly understands that he will be under MS Dhoni’s shadow in the World Cup like it has been throughout his career. He funnily referred to himself as the small first-aid kit travelling with the team while also adding that he is ready to take up any role that the team assigns him. Karthik is well aware that Dhoni will most probably retire after the World Cup and is looking forward to sharing the dressing room with Pant after the mega event.

I did it with Dhoni then why can’t we?

Dinesh Karthik lauded the Delhi cricketer for his exceptional abilities and called him a special player. He also predicted that Pant will play for a long time in blue jersey across all the formats. “Pant is a special player. I am sure he is going to play for India for a long time. If I can play along with Dhoni, why can’t we two (Pant and I) also share the dressing room post World Cup,” he was quoted as saying by Times Now.

Pant and Karthik were in the same squad during the England tour and it was clear that the selectors will only pick one of them in the World Cup team. But the latter has cleared that they never talked about it while playing for the country or whenever they met.

“There will always be someone who will miss out. That’s the nature of the game. But we (Pant and I) never talked about it. He was aware of his opportunity and so was I. If he had been selected, I would have been disappointed. Now that I have been selected, I’m sure he is a bit disappointed,” Karthik further added.
