Dinesh Karthik has had a remarkable start to 2018. The No.4 slot in the Indian ODI setup has been vacant for quite some time now and Karthik is one of the contenders who has taken his claim pretty high for the spot. The wicketkeeper-batsman has made use of whatever little opportunities that he has got at the international level. He is not a regular in the ODI playing XI but seems to deliver whenever the skipper puts faith in him.
The Tamil Nadu batsman has been around for quite some time now but the moment of his career came in the Nidahas Trophy in Sri Lanka earlier this year when he played a blinder against Bangladesh to take India home. Karthik showed to the world that he is not all about working the ball into the gaps and playing along the ground. He can clear the fence when the situation demands and improve his strike rate by changing gears at any moment of the game.
T20 is not all about power
Karthik is currently leading the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. His side is currently placed fourth on the points table and needs to win few more matches to get closer to qualification for the knockouts. He was one among the thousands who were impressed by AB de Villiers’ performance against the Delhi Daredevils.
The Protea batsman scored 90 runs off 39 deliveries to make a mockery of the target set by the Daredevils. “I did watch that innings. I genuinely wish I play some day like him, but I guess it won’t happen in this new, short life of mine,” Karthik was quoted as saying by espncricinfo.com.
There is a big difference in the way Karthik and AB play cricket. The Indian is someone who likes to build an innings slowly by piercing the gaps while the Proteas great can start his innings at any gear and switch to his liking by playing shots to all parts of the ground. The KKR skipper may not muscle the ball but is equally effective during crunch moments of the game.
“I am not as powerful as [Andre] Russell. I have to find the DK way of doing things, which is run hard, find the gaps, run hard, beat the field,” he added.
