Dinesh Karthik once ran into Sourav Ganguly and got an earful
Karthik was with the Indian team as an 18-year-old and bumped into the wrong man.
Dinesh Karthik’s career has been topsy-turvy, to say the least, and most times he has had to encounter turbulent times. He hasn’t been able to cement his position in the lineup though he made his debut as early as in 2004. Karthik forayed into international cricket in England as an 18-year-old, he was peppered with short deliveries by the likes of Alex Wharf, former English pacer.
He was also a part of the 2004 Champions Trophy squad, but he didn’t get to play in that series. In the event, the Men in Blue locked horns with Pakistan but unfortunately lost the match by three wickets. Karthik played the role of a waterboy, carrying drinks for his fellow players. However, even without being a part of the playing eleven, he was a part of a mild altercation.
Karthik’s altercation with Ganguly
Recently, Karthik featured on the show ‘Breakfast with Champions’ hosted by Gaurav Kapur, during their chat, the wicketkeeper-batsman revealed an instance, when he rammed into Sourav Ganguly, the then Indian captain. After the fall of a wicket, Karthik ran towards the players who were standing in a huddle with drinks, but he couldn’t stop himself at the right time and bumped into Ganguly who was pushed a couple of steps ahead. The skipper gave him quite a scolding for that.
“Ye kaun hai, kaha kaha se pakad ke laate ho? (who is this person, from where do you get these people?)” Ganguly lashed out.
The match was played at Edgbaston in Birmingham and the Pakistani bowlers dictated terms to the Men in Blue after which Mohammad Yousuf and Shoaib Malik got their team home in the last over. Meanwhile, during the chat, Karthik also talked about his camaraderie with Rohit Sharma while also reminiscing about an incident when the opener almost missed the flight to England.
He also talked about his own self and the shortcomings in his personality that he needs to work on going forward. Currently, Karthik is England where India is playing a three-match T20I series.
