Former Indian international Dinesh Mongia saw his cricketing career break down like a pack of cards when he was suspected of match fixing in the Indian Cricket League (ICL) which was brought up to challenge the Indian Premier League. Though the tournament has been called off and is now defunct, Dinesh Mongia has not been set free by the BCCI. The cricketer now desperately hopes for the BCCI to hear his plea and give him an amnesty.

New Zealand cricketer Lou Vincent who admitted to being involved in match fixing during the tournament, took Dinesh Mongia’s name in a London court in 2015. Vincent stated that Mongia was one of those cricketers who was associated with the illegal activities at the time of the ICL. However, Mongia was set free by the courts due to lack of evidence, the BCCI did not forgive him. But Mongia has not been denied the permission to play first-class cricket and he also was not imposed with charges.

Speaking about the issue, Mongia claimed that he is the only player who did not get justice from the board. He hoped that the board listens to him like they listened to Mohammad Azharuddin. Mongia mentioned that there were zero charges against him. The left handed batsman cited the example of Ambati Rayudu and said that the batsman was set free which allowed him to represent India in the future.

What Mongia had to say:

“I hope someone in the BCCI hears my case just as they have Mohammad Azharuddin’s.” said Mongia.

“There was no evidence against me. I was the only player not to receive BCCIs amnesty to the ICL players. Ambati Rayudu earned a reprieve (for signing up with ICL) and went on to play for India,” he added.

“Is it not strange that the BCCI never banned me but has not responded to my requests to clear my dues? I have written to the BCCI and PCA (Punjab Cricket Association) but have not heard from them,” he said.

With age not on his side, Mongia’s first class career is approaching a dead end. But the player who was a regular in the Indian team in the early 2000’s demands justice in his case as he was not found guilty.
