BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said that it is unfair to make comparisons between Rishabh Pant and MS Dhoni based on the captaincy experience the latter has. Pant came under scrutiny after he missed the chance of using DRS against Tim David in the must-win game against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2022.
This tactical blunder was confirmed when replays showed that David had edged the delivery from Shardul Thakur. Despite persuasion from teammates, Pant decided not to go for the review and David came out as the match-winner for Mumbai as he smashed 34 runs in 11 balls.
Delhi Capitals had their fate in their own hands and Pant’s captaincy came into question, however, Ganguly showed his support for the youngster. “Don’t compare Pant with MS Dhoni. Dhoni has so much experience, has captained 500-plus games in IPL, Tests and ODIs. So it’s not fair for Rishabh to be compared with Dhoni,” Ganguly was quoted by India Today.
‘I’m sure they will be back among runs’ – Sourav Ganguly on Virat and Rohit’s current form
The former captain also added that despite Mumbai Indians finishing last in this year’s IPL, there is nothing to worry about Rohit Sharma’s form or leadership qualities.
“Everybody is human. There will be mistakes but Rohit’s record as captain is outstanding. Five IPL titles, Asia Cup winner, he has won whatever he has captained, so his record as captain is outstanding. Mistakes will happen because they are all human,” said Ganguly.
Rohit only managed to score 268 runs in 14 innings at an average of 19.14 and strike rate of 120.17. Meanwhile, Ganguly heaped praise on Virat Kohli as the former India captain scored a vital 50+ score in the last match against Gujarat Titans.
“They are very good players. I’m sure they will be back among runs. They play so much cricket that at times they go out of form. Kohli played very well in the last game, especially when it was required for RCB. That’s why he (Kohli) was so happy that RCB qualified. They are all great players, it’s a matter of time before they will be at their best,” he said.
