Indian captain Virat Kohli has developed a knack of scoring hundreds. He really got going in One-Day International cricket first and eventually has been piling on the tons in Tests as well. He is currently leading the Indian team in England and after three Test matches has scored two hundreds and a 97, his tally of 440 runs in the series is the highest by quite a distance. While most have already started equating him to the great Sachin Tendulkar, his former batting mate Virender Sehwag isn’t sure if he’s there yet.

The hundred in the 2nd innings of the Trent Bridge Test, was his 23rd in the longest format of the game, couple that with his 35 ODI hundreds and the Indian captain already has 58 international centuries. At 29, he still has at least 5-7 years of cricket ahead of him and many back him to break Tendulkar’s 100 international centuries record and Sehwag wants to wait for him to accomplish that before comparing the two.

“I don’t feel it is right to compare Kohli with Tendulkar. It will be logical only if he is able to achieve the numerous records (200 Tests, more than 30,000 international runs etc.) set by Sachin. Every player including Virat wants to reach the benchmark of 100 international hundreds set by Sachin so he will try to do the same,” Sehwag said on IndiaTV’s show ‘Cricket Ki Baat’.

Kohli has the talent

Considering the way Virat has shaped his career in the last few years and is being called the best in the world right now, Viru is certain that he will be able to set new records. “He (Kohli) can do it as he has the talent and the hunger required to achieve these milestones. It becomes clear after you see the way he prepares and focuses on each match disregarding whatever happened in the previous one,” the former Indian opener added.

Very recently, after the conclusion of the 3rd Test in Nottingham, the head coach of the Indian team Ravi Shastri said that in his experience, Kohli’s work ethic and preparations for a game match only with Sachin.

Sehwag also seemed to echo that and said: “A player becomes great only if he prepares well for each and every game. Today there is no one better than him in all three formats. He is an inspiration for players around the world. Even international players, when I talk to them in IPL, they talk about Kohli and his successful method.”
