Don’t know when Izhaan will be able to see his father again: Sania Mirza

Coronavirus pandemic has left many people stranded in different countries, staying away from their respective families after the nations kept strict travel restrictions to contain the virus. The flight operations across the globe have been stopped amid the lockdown. However, Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik’s story is quite different from this.

The couple became proud parents to Izhaan in October 2018. Just before the lockdown was announced, Sania Mirza had returned from the USA to Hyderabad, whereas Shoaib Malik was busy playing Pakistan Super League 2020 in Pakistan. Now, the only worry for Sania is she doesn’t know when Izhaan is going to see his father again.

“So he got stuck in Pakistan, I got stuck here. That was very difficult to deal with because we have a small child. We don’t know when Izhaan will be able to see his father again. It’s as basic as that,” Sania Mirza told The Indian Express on Facebook Live.

“We are both pretty positive and practical people. He has a mother who is over 65 and by herself, so he needs to be there. So in the end, it worked out best that he was there with her. We hope we are healthy and come out of this on the right side of it.”

Sania was hurt seeing the pictures of migrant laborers walking hundreds of kilometers to go back to their respective homes without food and money in their pockets. During the ongoing crisis, the tennis star did her bit by contributing to the needy by participating in an online fundraising event on Instagram alongside Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and many others. They raised more than INR 3 crore with their movement called Youth Feed India, but she feels that’s not enough in a country like India, which has a huge population.

“It’s almost like you feel guilty to be in a privileged position when you see videos of them,” she said. “It’s heart-wrenching. I really do feel for those who go on a day-to-day or week-to-week basis financially. The daily wagers…” she said. “Fortunately, a lot of us are in a privileged position and are able to help. I personally have reacted by trying to help. We raised Rs 3.3 crore, if I am not wrong, in a period of three weeks with a movement called Youth Feed India. But our population is so large that it’s difficult to say what we all are doing is enough.”
