Shreyas Iyer, who has earned the maiden call-up the Indian T20 squad, is hopeful of making his debut in the shortest format of the game. India is all set to play a three-match series against New Zealand which will commence on Wednesday. The squad is boasted with the presence of youngsters like Iyer and Mohammad Siraj who are rewarded for their performances in domestic cricket. But it remains to be seen if the team management includes the two in the playing XI during the series.
Shreyas Iyer led the ‘A’ side to the title triumph during their tour to South Africa. They won the tri-series which also included Afghanistan. Shreyas Iyer himself scored a magnificent ton in the final and led from the front. The chief selector MSK Prasad has also rated him highly and also confirmed a few days ago that he will be in the plans for the national reckoning. However, Iyer needs to remain on his toes and perform whenever he gets the opportunity.
I will give my best if given the chance
Shreyas Iyer revealed his experience of playing in South Africa during the tri-series and said that he felt very good to contribute to the team’s success in the final. “It was very helpful for me. I was going through a good patch, got good starts, but I was not able to convert them into big knocks till the final. It (the final) was a big game, it (the knock) was really satisfying that it came through and obviously, once you get the team through, you get a lot of attention from the teammates as well,” he told reporters on the eve of the first T20I against the Kiwis in Delhi.
He also cleared that he is flexible to bat at any position and he will be happy if he plays even a single game in the series. I think I am very flexible. I don’t mind batting at any number. Even in Indian Premier League (IPL) this year, I was shuffled from number four to number three. It did not really matter to as I am comfortable. “Whatever number I bat, if I get to play the game, I will see to it that I give my best. “I am hoping to be a part of the playing XI. There are three matches and it will be great for me even if I am able to play one game,” Iyer concluded.
