'Don't remember seeing MS Dhoni lose too many games like that' - Michael Vaughan not impressed by CSK skipper Ravindra Jadeja

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has raised questions over Ravindra Jadeja’s captaincy after CSK’s loss against the Gujarat Titans. Vaughan believes that under MS Dhoni’s leadership, CSK did not lose so many games from a winning situation.

In the recently concluded match, CSK failed to defend 170 against Gujarat Titans. Though they started off well and picked four early wickets, reducing GT to 48/4 in eight overs, they could not maintain the consistency throughout and poor on-field decisions handed them the fifth defeat of the season as GT snatched the victory from jaws of defeat after David Miller’s heroics.

Vaughan felt that the game would not have lasted till the last over if Dhoni were the captain and that he would not have given the opposition any chance to bounce back in the game. Vaughan noticed Dhoni’s strategy of setting the field during the game and had his thoughts to share on the scenario.

“As a new captain, you want to win tight games. Honestly, it wasn’t a tight game and they lost it. They should have easily won that game by 10 or 15 runs and I can only imagine what would happen now. I don’t remember seeing MS Dhoni lose too many games like that. You are never used to seeing MS’ side lose a tight game and wouldn’t have even let it get to be in tight,” Vaughan told Cricbuzz.

“You could see then that he was maneuvering himself into the captain’s role, maneuvering fielders, which is fine. I think Ravindra Jadeja would want that from MS Dhoni behind the stumps. But when you’re at your infantry stages as a captain, you want to win the games you were in control of,” he added.

CSK lost the game due to poor field decisions towards the end

The game turned when Chris Jordan conceded 25 runs in the 18^th over as Rashid smashed him for multiple boundaries. Dwayne bravo tried his best in the penultimate over, but the ball was given to Jordan again for the last over, where he had to defend 13 runs. Miller took full advantage of the situation as the game slipped away from CSK’s hands.

Vaughan felt that CSK’s defeat should be a learning point for the new skipper and that he should understand how important it is for captains to win such close-cut games by putting correct field settings and supporting the bowling unit.

CSK will next face Mumbai Indians in their next encounter. The two most successful teams in the history of IPL have been struggling to make a mark this season, and thus will look for redemption in their upcoming game.
