India and Afghanistan played one of the most exhilarating ODIs in the near future in the ongoing Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The fortunes of both the teams swung like a pendulum as the game eventually in a tie and one would say it was a fitting result. No team deserved to lose on the day but Mohammad Shahzad was the hero for his team who slammed 124 runs in front of his idol, MS Dhoni. However, Asghar Afghan feels that the veteran didn’t enjoy his knock much from behind the stumps.

Shahzad took the attack to India’s inexperienced bowling line-up from the word go. His powerful strokes of the front foot came to the fore when he was batting and to his credit, also surprised everyone by running comparatively fast between the wickets. He was in the middle for almost 36 overs and was dismissed by Kedar Jadhav not before scoring his fifth ODI ton.

It was an entertaining knock during which Shahzad slammed 11 fours and seven sixes and also hit a helicopter shot which was a trademark Dhoni shot a few years ago.

We enjoyed it a lot

During the post-match press conference, Afghanistan captain Asghar Afghan was delighted with the result after losing a couple of close matches earlier in the tournament. However, he was effusive in the praise of Shahzad for his knock and when asked if Dhoni liked his scintillating knock, Asghar had a brief but funny response to leave the reporters in splits.

“Hum bhi bahut enjoy rahe the … Mere khayaal mean MS ne enjoy nahin kiya kyunki usko maar pad rahi thi udhar … toh humne bahut enjoy kiya. (We enjoyed his innings, but I don’t think MS enjoyed it because he [sic India] were getting hit around the ground, but we really enjoyed it), he said with a smile on his face.

Afghanistan’s Asia Cup has ended while India stay back in Dubai for the final scheduled to be played on Friday either against Pakistan or Bangladesh.
